How many times have we whispered I’m going crazy. I’m losing my mind. I don’t know what to do. Voices pacing, louder and louder. Some wait for rescue. Some bargain with the heavens. Some shout into the heavens.
Please, Lord God, help me now.
And when nothing answers, we threaten the night with finality.
We scream until our voices cannot speak, until pain becomes our language, our teacher and still silence answers.
How many have stood here or watched someone they love, circle this same ring of fire. An endless loop of hoping, hoping someone else will reach us, before we disappear.
No one gave us the blueprint for the labyrinth of life. No formula for the gravity of suffering. No manual for being the human, or who I was destined to become. We were thrown into existence mid-storm and told to call it living. And I was angry.
Angry that no one explained why the heart breaks. Why fear paralyzes. Why substances feel like salvation. Only to find out they have become my shackles. Angry that we are handed pain before wisdom. Angry that life became survival, that meaning became a riddle. How cruel, I thought, to design a world without guidance.
Until one day after enough running, after enough drowning in the chaos, the mind did something unexpected. It grew quiet. Not empty, not numb, but still. And in that stillness, I realized something terrifying and beautiful. We were never meant to be given the blueprint, it is meant to be discovered from the inside out.
We stop worshipping the chaos and begin listening to what has always mattered. We turn inward past the panic, past the static of fear, past the desperate need for someone else to save us. And somehow, we begin to see farther into our own consciousness to understand, more than we ever did while running from it.
This is the moment the gate swings open. The souls steps forward and speaks. Not through chemicals, not through masks. But through the thoughts that lift us instead of bury us. Through the feelings we once ran from for fear of facing them. Faith is believing in what cannot yet be seen. Courage is facing what is not yet know. Fear stands between them asking who will you become?
If there were no fear there would be nothing to overcome. To face the darkness is to meet the shadow self within not to kill it, but to stand before it and refuse to run.
Faith’s opposite is doubt. Courage’s shadow is fear. And sometimes they feel identical. I had faith there was life beyond addiction even when I couldn’t imagine it. I was terrified. And still stepped forward. Fear in my stomach. Courage in my heart. Faith in something I could feel before I could see.
Hope came, momentum returned. The body began healing while the mind grew tired of the war. And when the battle felt unbearable, I returned to what I knew, mistaking my substances for familiarity and safety.
This is where faith is tested. Where staying becomes harder than escaping. Because fear and courage are not opposites. They are twins born in the same moment. To feel one is to feel the other. Just as anger proves caring, fear proves meaning. If it did not matter, you would not feel a thing. Being afraid is fearful. It’s reactive, causes paralysis. But fear is also powerful, it can lead us into action. My choice to redirect fear became my strength my clarity.
Substances once became my armor, my masks for battle. Risks felt easier than vulnerability. But stripping my armor standing without my weapons, that is the real war. We chase what harms us and flee what could heal us, until I asked myself. I’m I fighting the darkness or I’m I afraid of the light?
The strength to step forward is the first requirement of the chosen path. Where does it come from? From that quiet realization that conquest is inward, the victory is self. Fear expresses the will to survive. Courage expresses the will to act. And heroes, real ones, will tell you the truth. They were afraid, and in the same breath they were brave. Because every time you feel fear, courage is already there, waiting for you to claim it. Perhaps the most beautiful truth of all is this: life was never meant to be solved, no formula, no manual for being human. But rather, an accumulation of exploration and experience, always unfolding before you, through the wild, beautiful, unique, sacred architecture you are learning to become.
