Astronomical Events for September

You should be seeing the Fomalhaut, a young star 25 light-years away, is a major focus for exoplanet and debris disk research. Astronomers have discovered that what was previously thought to be a directly imaged exoplanet orbiting the star is actually a vast, expanding cloud of dust created by violent collisions between massive space rocks.

Because you are located in WI, Fomalhaut is known as the “loneliest star” because it sits in a rather barren patch of the autumn and winter sky, giving you a clear view out toward the south and into intergalactic space. Fomalhaut reaches its highest point in the evening sky during the autumn months (September through November).

How to Find It: Use the Great Square of Pegasus to help orient yourself and look southward. Fomalhaut will be the only bright, magnitude +1.2 white star shining isolated in that lower region of the sky.

Companion Object: When visible in the evening sky, it often shares its neighborhood with the planet Saturn, which glows with a steady, golden-cream color.
