Dear Stepping Stones,

It’s a new year and my goal is to take care of myself with regular exercise, sleep, and healthy eating. There is plenty of information I can find on that. But, what about the rest of me? I would like to find a better state of balance in the new year.

A new year can be better by reviewing the basics which includes bringing order into our life by considering the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual life. Although the body gets up every day, ready to support us, it also needs some reassurances and comforts that are real to it. The body likes to connect with others. It’s important to stay connected with trusted friends and family. We can liberate ourselves from isolation and limiting thoughts of aloneness and move to groups with collective caring, inclusiveness, and interactive experiences. Volunteering with others, sharing a skill we have, or developing new skills such as crafting, art projects, singing in a group, or a community-based project. Most communities have activities that we can participate in with others. Habitat for Humanity is an excellent way to share skills or develop new talents and work with others.

A friend of ours designs community murals and has volunteers come participate in painting. Grow by sharing what we can give by being involved with others through healthy relating and collaboration. Participate in social events and be open to new friendships. Walk in nature and recognize the beauty all around us. Appreciate the sun shining down on the world. Having a pet can add joy and has been proven through research to lower blood pressure and heart rate, plus a dog is an excellent walking and joyful outside buddy. Dogs and horses in particular have therapeutic qualities that have helped veterans and disabled people move forward with confidence.

Many physical activities will assist us emotionally as well. Listen to uplifting music. Go to performing art events. There are many performing art groups that need volunteers on stage or behind the scene that we can participate with. Art exhibits can be emotionally satisfying when we open ourselves to new experiences bringing appreciation. Variation can be the spice in life that keeps us joyfully moving forward.

When we understand our needs and wants in life, finances, constant advertising, and social falsities don’t enslave. When we feel we are emotionally going down a rabbit hole, bring in the opposite positive energy to balance out the negative. Become emotionally resilient, float up like a bobber on a calm pond. We could take a few deep breaths and give life a chance to set ourselves on a better path. Balance is key. Not too many activities or not enough interaction. If we are running with too much to do, question what can we let go of that’s unnecessarily complicating life and not worth holding on to anymore. Design constructive boundaries to healthy relating.

Mentally it is important to acknowledge the old and know it is the past that we learn from. Use that experience to let go of negative attitudes and build uplifting thoughts and understanding of life. No matter the struggle, the effort to move forward is worth it. Often a shift in perspective is all that is needed. Be present in the moment with awareness and look for opportunities to see a need and fill it. Sharing the intention that we care to have positive interactions with others can be as small as opening a door, smiling with eye contact, being gracious while waiting in line, and keeping a positive mindset. This is a thoughtful and purposeful way of sharing with the intent of helping ourself and others. If at times, thinking moves into fear or anxiety, know that those states can dissipate with positive intent. Move with purposeful intent to re-establish balance. Alleviate issues rather than aggravating issues into something more than they are. Sometimes just doing something instead of sitting on an issue, removes the pressure. Flow forward with give and take, flexibility, and adaptability. Life is supposed to be challenging. That’s how we learn and grow. The reward is better understanding and wisdom of life.

What is a positive attribute that motivates you? Kindness, caring, persistence, acceptance, understanding, healthy relating, harmony, gratitude, honor; there are many possibilities.  Form that attribute as a positive thought to motivate you forward.  It is with consistent effort that you will get there.

The body, emotions, and mind may not see things the same way, but they will work together with the mind’s motivating purpose. It’s necessary to have patience with ourselves. Self-acceptance is a great gift, so we allow ourself progression on our path with the heart guiding the way. Stress can be a motivator and an opportunity to learn, adjust, adapt, and move forward with new understanding, balance, and steady footing. Stay with one’s purpose. The intent of the mind’s vision to betterment, will move one forward. We wish a better way forward with balance for all!
