Dear Stepping Stones,

I’m trying to find balance and joy in life. How do I find that and stay there?

Balance and joy are a way of living we all need to strive for.  Both require enjoying and being open to life now, in the moment, and adjusting internally and to exterior life situations. Open to joy everyday regardless of the circumstances. Can we find the humor in our personal life situations and find creative solutions to add interest, fun, and wonderment no matter the conditions life brings? Can we find meaning in ways that bring connection to others? Relating to ourself and others in a caring way of support, and the purpose of doing that, may bring inspiration that fuels the result of joy and balance.

Reflect on seeing the innocence in a puppy’s or child’s eyes and reflect on when both have found wonderment, curiosity, and awe. Bringing these moments into focus will help us connect to our own inner child’s joy of discovery. Make the choice to enjoy life as it is now. It may require a change in attitude, acceptance of ourself, or adjusting our movement to a new quality of life balance.

Remember the experience of observing others with physical, emotional, or mental challenges as they accepted their situation and it led to a life of balance and joy regardless of the obstacles. Acceptance seems to be that mid-way point between joy and frustration of one’s life situations. It allows one be happy with what they have right now.

Life’s situations can throw one out of balance and joy. Be determined that this is temporary.  When this happens know that we can work through it and choose to find a constructive way forward. Life is challenging. Accept the challenge. Our physical self, emotional self, and mental self naturally want to self-balance and we as the Thinker can allow that to happen by finding beauty and gratitude, adapting in the now with healthy relating. Let go of past and future worries and use constructive thinking in the moment to snap back to the present. The opportunity and potential of the future is in the power of our choice. The past is over and the future is based on our choices now.

We recently experienced calling the customer service of a bank and a doctor’s office. Both experiences had a customer service rep that was not engaged, was not receptive or listening, and was not willing to find common ground. As spiritual students, we seek connection and may feel defeated when that doesn’t happen. When the calls ended, and when we could put emotions aside, we reassessed to find insight with another approach. Being on the same team and working to a common solution is hoped for as a spiritual student. We care and want to work with others and when one party or both is not open, the relationship changes to one of being a victim or loser in the relationship and the other being the winner. Seek connection with both sides listening and receptive. Strive to communicate with understanding in the moment. Be open to find common ground. Find a different way to say something if not understood.  Be patient and respectful to find the icing on the cake, the sweet spot of connecting. Know that you both may have reactionary patterns that are being worked through. Attitude means something and by allowing with helpfulness, it can bring two sides together on the same team to a solution.

After reviewing our intent and hoping for better results, we both made a second call. Acceptance of the situation led to ways of finding creative solutions and even humor. We found that having an elevated attitude and leading the conversation, helped find acknowledgement of what was being said as both parties followed the conversation. Finding commonality and receptiveness brought walls down. The situations were solved with the intent to be together in the conversation.

Everyday strive with effort to seek balance by checking in and being aware of where we are in the moment and adjust as needed. We do our best to stay in the moment with acceptance, gratitude, and joy finding creative solutions that lead to fun, interest, and healthy relating. Choose to enjoy life now and know that we are accountable and responsible to our choices. Our greatest power is in our choice. That power and intent builds our future. Having balance and joy as a purpose can inspire and give meaning to choices that guide us to relate to ourself and others in constructive supportive ways. Have persistence to that cause. Your desire for balance and joy in your life is a gift to all; keep it going…one stepping stone at a time.
