This column is planned for a dialogue about messages, influences, and guidance we get every day in some way. It could be about a dream you had and were curious about. It could be about that book that fell off the shelf in front of you. It could be about that “wrong turn” you took that led you to something unexpected.

Is what you experienced of significance to you or just a happening. These occurrences can be a place where our psyche and personality life are connecting and perhaps reflect each other. What could it mean to us personally? We will explore the difference between causality (cause and result), temporality (happening in time/space), or synchronicity (psyche and matter meet).

One example I offer—Recently my car warning light came on saying “battery system failure.” It turned out that my alternator was only delivering 30% the needed energy to the battery. I was headed out of town, but having the car checked out seemed important. When I read from the on-line manual, it was in fact recommended, that the car should not be driven. I could have had a sudden dead battery and been stranded with no electronics in the car.

Unbelievably, there was a cancellation in the service department, there was a mechanic who could take the car in NOW, and the service person (Chris) was able to get the diagnosis, find a part, and install the alternator today – NOW. I got the courtesy car home and in about 4 hours I was safely back in my car, confident it was functioning properly.

I happen to believe that symbolically, the car or vehicle could represent our body, according to dream dictionary and some psychologists. The alternator delivers energy to the battery to keep it charged. What if the alternator represents my body’s energy source? Then, I was led to ask myself the question—Have I been running on empty? Have I been feeling unsupported? Have I felt my energy run out and have to go home and take a nap, drink an energy drink, or stop my project and read a novel?

I would invite you to think about your day, or night, or dream. If you would like to write in to ask about any of your experiences you were curious about, I would love to have that dialogue.  There is a group of us that meet and talk about meaning in dreams, daily experiences, and curious things. I would share your questions with this group and post our ideas in this column.  We don’t claim to be professional psychologists—we are an experienced group of people who feel thinking about things and questioning events more deeply could give us an insight or guidance that was a surprise.
